Marcos Tinoco teaching us important deep half guard sweeps

Kudos to Marcos Tinoco for creating this video.

Review

Last training I went to we practiced a few interesting deep half guard sweeps, which were rather technicaly and not too beginner friendly. My initial thoughts were to find a video that would explain these sweeps in a bit more detail, but instead I managed to find this video by Marcos Tinoco, which explains three different deep half guard sweeps. The first one is especially good and he explains in depth how to get into position and how to execute the sweep. The second one is a also excellent where you instead pull the back to execute the sweep. I completely skipped the third one.

Key points

  • A bit more technical than some other sweeps.
  • Remember to get on your back completely.
  • Use momentum with your leg.
  • Third one didn’t seem too fun to drill.

Important timestamps

  • 0:55 - First sweep deep half guard
  • 4:42- Second sweep deep half guard

How I Drill

First sweep

  1. Start in deep half guard.
  2. Go for a half guard and put your arm around him and grab his hip, simultaneously dive for the other leg.
  3. Pull your opponent over you to force the hands on the mat.
  4. Swing your other leg to create momentum and move your body under them and to the other side.
  5. Force hands down on the floor by swinging your hip.
  6. Grab their wrist and bring it to your other hand, grab their sleeve.
  7. Bring knees higher.
  8. Push them away with your legs and move up on your back elbow.
  9. Swing their knee to the other side and get on top.

Second sweep

  7. Change to double grip on their sleeve.
  8. Move the original grip hand up on their shoulder.
  9. Roll and pull.
