Marcos Tinoco teaching us how to sweep bigger opponents
Review
The sweeps shown in this video can be useful but do require a bit of practice, and they may not be as intuitive as some other sweeps. The video is short and to the point, which is good. The technique is shown in a clear and concise manner, and it contains timestamps.
Key points
- Hold both sleeves - much easier to control and get him back in case he passes your guard
- When he steps up, keep your feets on his hips, and push him away
Important timestamps
- 0:55 - First sweep close guard
- 4:23 - Second sweep standing guard
- 6:39 - Third sweep cross grip
- 7:42 - Third sweep leg kick
How I Drill
First sweep
- Start with your opponent standing, and you keeping your feet on his hips and hold both sleeves with your hands.
- If he breaks your sleeve grip, grab his collar.
- Move his arm to the other side, don’t let him trap your leg. At the same time, move your body to the side.
- Create momentum with your leg, and at the same time do a collar drag. He should fall forward and you can grab his back.
Second sweep
- Start with your opponent standing, and you keeping your feet on his hips and hold both sleeves with your hands. Same as earlier.
- Switch one of your hands from his sleeve to his leg.
- Get a De La Riva hook to support his leg.
- With your other leg, push his leg above the knee and pull his sleeve
- Push again with your leg on his hips. He should fall forward and you move into mount or knee on belly.
Third sweep
- Start in closed guard, hold both sleeves.
- Cross grip his sleeve.
- Hip esacpe towards the cross grip and grab his elbow forward.
- Your opponent should try to smash your knees down to the side.
- With your leg, kick his knee, on the same side as his elbow drag.
