Two videos that keep improving my closed guard game

We already went through the basics of posture in closed guard in this post, but I found another video that complements the earlier one by Bernardo Faria and Henry Akins perfectly.

Kudos to Jean Jacques Machado for creating this video.

By taking both of these videos into account during my training I managed to significantly improve my posture in the closed guard.

Review

This is another short and sweet video, where Jean Jacques Machado perfectly exaplins posture in closed guard, and opens up about the pelvic tilt.

The key points will include points from the other video along with the points from this.

Key points

  • Do not rely on your hands for posture, according to Henry Akins you’ll fall into a trap, but Jean Jacques Machado takes this even further and states that you shouldn’t let your shoulders go beyond the belt line.
  • Both Henry and Jean emphasize the importance of keeping your knees tucked in.
  • Push your butt into your ankles, as if you sit down
  • Tuck and turn your pelvic up. Everytime they try to attack, you should tilt your hips up and create a tension in their legs, which will significantly reduce their ability to attack.
  • This the purpose of the arm as well, keeping it at the belt and their stomach keeps them from attacking with a hip bump sweep.
  • Especially at 2.58 you can see the exact moves.

How I Drill

  1. Start in closed guard, tuck your knees in and keep your hand on their belt.
  2. Your partner will try to break your posture various ways, and sweep with hip bumps or scissor sweeps.
  3. You will try to maintain your posture.
  4. Do this for 3 minutes.
  5. Switch roles.
  6. Repeat.

I practice this way to improve my closed guard game.
